Don’t Buy This Washer Ad by Maytag

This is an ad I found that ran in newspapers throughout 1924 & 1925. It's a classic example of the "Don't Do This Until You..." hook & comes from long-standing...View More washer company, Maytag. This is an interesting implementation of the "Don't Buy" hook in that it's focused on getting people to "try it" instead. Being told not to buy makes it feel like you're not being sold. However, in this case, they are selling you, but it's for a trial. It's a clever way of presenting a soft sell.
