This is the ad style that David Ogilvy made famous. If you look into our David Ogilvy archives, you’ll see that almost every one of his ads had this structure except his house ads advertising the agency, which were informative advertorials.
Whereas most ads rely on the headline to grab attention, Ogilvy choose to use a striking image first. One of the ways he created curiosity in these images was by using obscure characters such as the Hathaway man with the eye patch or the Schweppes man. You might have noticed that this style is actually very popular on the web right now. Designers have gravitated to putting big images at the top of posts followed by content with lots of white space. It’s a very clean look & a style worth considering.
