What's made Facebook's homepage stand out over the years is that if you're not signed up, this is the page you will be presented with by visiting their homepage. It's extremely simple & focuses on getting signups. It's a prime example of what we call the "welcome gate" today, which is when you visit a home page (often for the first time) & are simply presented with short copy & an opt-in form.
